Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The authors selected 132 local trees exceptional for their size, beauty, rarity, or history. Each description includes a color photograph and locations of notable specimens visible from the street. Appendices list trees by the months for best viewing and propose nine pleasant neighborhood tours.

Review:

With 22 native species and hundreds of introduced varieties, the Greater Portland area is home to many outstanding trees. For this unique illustrated guide the authors have selected 132 local trees exceptional for their size, beauty, rarity, history, or other unusual features. Each description includes one or more locations of a notable specimen visible from the street, along with a color photograph. Scientific names are listed with pronunciation guides and the more familiar common name(s). More than 500 addresses are given from all parts of the metropolitan area, covering about 350 square miles and including Sauvie Island, Oregon City, Beaverton, Tigard, and Gresham.

Rich in botanical and practical information, this compendium contains 196 color photographs that not only serve as a pictorial tour of Portland history, since, as the authors note, a history of trees is also a history of the people who planted and cared for them. Useful appendices list trees by the months in which they are best viewed; present nine delightful neighborhood tours for tree-lovers on foot, on bicycles, or in cars; and identify the largest specimens in the area.

A top-notch reference guide, Trees of Greater Portland will delight those who wish to explore Portland and its history, as well as their own back yards.

Jane Finch-Howell, April 2, 2010 (view all comments by Jane Finch-Howell)
One of my favorite reference books because it is enjoyable on several levels: I love it for its examples of actual, mature trees I'm interested in seeing. But the peeks into Portland's history and growth, and the suggested tree walks are delightful additions. I think anyone interested in trees, walking, or Portland history will find reasons to use and enjoy this book.
