Conifers: The Illustrated Encyclopedia (2 Volume set)by D M Van Gelderen
Synopses & Reviews
This magnificent pictorial encyclopedia includes not only the latest cultivars but also rarities such as Wollemia nobilis, recently discovered in Australia. From towering redwoods photographed in their coastal habitat to recent dwarf varieties so popular in small gardens, conifers are presented in all their astonishing diversity.
Book News Annotation:
Although this set appears very accessible with its many attractive color photographs, it is probably most useful for those with some knowledge of the taxonomy and structure of conifers--gardeners, landscape designers, and nursery professionals. The first volume begins with a short description of each of 65 genera belonging to the Ginkgophyta, Coniferophyta, and Gnetophyta. The rest of the set consists of photographs of individual species--with a one or two sentence caption--arranged by scientific name. Also included are maps of the hardiness zones of Europe, North America, and China, as well as an index of synonyms and an index of common names.
