Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Peter Chan has blended the ages-old wisdom of Chinese gardeners with the goals and needs of North American gardening. The result is a system of gardening that's easy, productive, and just fine for a small backyard. Peter proved this system worked well in the Northwest; his legion of supporters has demonstrated it makes gardening a joy wherever it's tried. The book is packed with hints – how to make compost the no-sweat way, simple methods of starting plants, harvesting tricks, stretching the growing season.

Peter Chan's raised-bed system means:

  • A beautiful garden of raised beds
  • Lots of vegetables, all season, in a small space
  • Less work and lower costs
  • Healthier plants and luscious harvests

  • About the Author

He's a plant pathologist and agricultural scientist and is on the faculty of Portland State University, with more than thirty years of successful teaching and practice in vegetable gardening. I've been using this book as my veggie gardening guide for about 20 years now and I've always been pleased with my results. I just introduced my son to it and he loves it too.

However, I think that must be a typo that it's priced at $61.95...

If you fallow this book exactly as Mr Chan shows you you will have one of the nicest gardens around. It was so fun to take the worst area in my small property. Total clay and nothing was growing on it, not even weeds. The first season I had the showiest garden in the nieghborhood. If you have a choice to only obtain one book on gardening this book is the book. Its my gardening bible. Very easy to understand. My book was lost in a move so I am purchasing another to replace it.
