From the moment I picked it up, I had my nose glued to Debra Prinzing's The Fifty Mile Bouquet. Having traded in heels for muck boots when I had my first child, and learning to grow specialty crops for market under organic certification, this book wrung true on many levels.

As my youngest recently started school, I happened into a "dream job" at an elite floral design shop in the city. Though I knew the flowers used would be treated with pesticides and chemical fertilizers, I had no idea to what extent or the thousands of miles they traveled. More than half of the year, the majority of the "high end" flowers are grown and shipped from China. As Prinzing describes, the chemical burden these flowers carry is tremendously high, not to mention the overall impact on the environment. From a sensory perspective the flowers lack "life." Though visually perfect, by today's standards, there is no variance from one stem to the next, out of about fifty varieties only the stock has scent, and the feel of the flowers is coated as opposed to clean and fresh.

Prinzing is dead on in her depiction of the conventional floral industry and offers hope and inspiration for those of us ready to embrace the grace and beauty organic flower growing and design has to offer.
