Publisher Comments:

A thorough, informative, and up-to-date reference on green, sustainable and energy-efficient home construction that clarifies definitions of green and sustainable and guides builders and architects through the process of new or remodel green construction, including issues of site, landscaping, durability, and energy-efficiency. It starts with clear explanations of the concepts and fundamentals of green, healthy and energy-efficient construction and walks the reader through the entire construction process, injecting expert advice at every decision point. Construction techniques, materials, and products are thoroughly explained, making the often vaguely understood concepts cleanly understandable. The book gives builders and architects the tools to respond to growing requests from homeowners for green and energy-efficient houses, whether new or remodeled. Homeowners can use the book to understand the concepts, process, and options, whether they're doing it themselves or working with a professional.

Book News Annotation:

According to Johnston (a leader in the green building movement) and Gibson (contributing editor to Fine Homebuilding magazine), 40% of the world's resources go into buildings and 66% of the electricity generated is for heating, cooling, and lighting them. After making a strong case for sustainable building, they provide practical advice for the process from the layout and foundation to interior finishes and landscaping in this well- illustrated guide. Synopsis:

No project has more universal appeal among woodworkers at every skill level than the blanket chest. It’s a simple form — essentially a large box with a lid — and yet it can be complex, elaborate, and intricately detailed. This collection of 30 original designs by artisans from around the globe illustrates the versatility of the chest, one of the oldest forms of furniture. The book opens with an overview of chest-building techniques; following are the chests, each of which features design and construction details, working drawings, and technical details of the more challenging pieces. Chests range from traditional to contemporary and offer inspiration to woodworkers and furniture makers of all skill levels. Approximately 200 photos and 50 drawings illustrate these designs.
