If Carl Hiaasen set one of his novels on a residential stretch of boundary line between British Columbia and Washington, or if Richard Russo's characters had relatives in the Pacific Northwest, the result might be something like Jim Lynch's Border Songs. Continue »

The Dirty Cowboy

by Amy Timberlake and Adam Rex

The Dirty Cowboy Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This ol' boy needs a bath!

After he finds a tumbleweed in his chaps and the numerous bugs buzzing around him affect his hearing, the cowboy decides it's time to head to the river. Once there, he peels off all his clothes and tells his trusty old dog to guard them against strangers. He takes a refreshing bath and emerges clean as corn — but so fresh-smelling that his dog doesn't recognize him! Negotiations over the return of the clothes prove fruitless. A wrestling match ensues in a tale that grows taller by the sentence, climaxing in a fabric-speckled dust devil.

Amy Timberlake has inserted a Western twang into this tale of filth and friendship, and Adam Rex has found many creative means of bodily concealment in his expressive, comical paintings.

Review:

"Transcending the cowboy-tale genre, this raucous romp should tickle bath-averse children everywhere." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"Because the cowboy is naked for a good part of the story and very active in large and small scenes and sequences, it is a real accomplishment to picture all the events without offending even the most modest sensibilities. Just lots of fun throughout." Children's Literature

Review:

"Filled with the dusty reds and sundown bronzes of the New Mexico setting, the paintings have a gritty, sinewy look that matches the earthy tone of the tale....A fun look at life on the range." School Library Journal

Review:

"Inspired by an anecdote passed down in the author's family, this cautionary tale should please all young readers with an aversion to soap and water." Kirkus Reviews

Synopsis:

Timberlake inserts a Western twang into this tale of filth and friendship, while Rex has found many creative means of bodily concealment in his expressive, comical paintings. Full color.

This book is hilarious and totally innocent. There is universal kid appeal when it comes to things like avoiding baths and the funny pictures just add to the sweetness of the story.

Nonsense! This book is extremely funny and perfectly suitable for children. Both of my kids really love this book (which we checked out of the local library, by the way). There is nothing inappropriate in it, unless you consider taking a bath inappropriate. Yes, the cowboy is naked, but the book is by no means "graphic". All the privates are cleverly hidden in the illustrations. It is a shame anyone would choose to keep this book off library shelves because of that, I don't see how this book could cause anyone any harm (other than from too much laughing). Read it, enjoy it.

I am an elementary school librarian and came across this book. I and a few parents and teachers were skeptical about putting this book on the shelf due to the graphic nature of the pictures. The cowboy is basically naked the entire story, and this book however funny the story is inappropriate and far to explicit for children.
