Pretty Little Mistakes: A Do-Over Novel Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

There are hundreds of lives sown inside Pretty Little Mistakes, Heather McElhatton's singularly spectacular, breathtakingly unique novel that has more than 150 possible endings. You may end up in an opulent mansion or homeless down by the river; happily married with your own corporation or alone and pecked to death by ducks in London; a Zen master in Japan or morbidly obese in a trailer park.

Is it destiny or decision that controls our fate? You can't change your past and start over from scratch in real life — but in Pretty Little Mistakes, you can! But be warned, choose wisely.

Review:

"Heather McElhatton's witty debut...will allow you the vicarious thrill of second and third chances. Here — finally! — is a choose-your-own-adventure book for grown-ups that's just as fun as the ones that saved you from family vacations as a kid." Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Review:

"[A]n occasionally clever book that will appeal only to a very limited audience of grown-up readers who are unfazed by its methodology....Interesting to read for about ten minutes, but some things really are just for kids." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"In a few particularly well-written plotlines, seeing how your life ends up can be a fun vacation from reality. In these, McElhatton's witty writing style echoes that of the top chick-lit writers on the market." Dallas-Ft. Worth Star Telegram

Synopsis:

McElhatton's singularly original debut novel has more than 150 possible endings — and illustrates how a single decision can change a life forever. The book asks, is it destiny or decision that controls fate?

This book is a fascinating adult take on the "choose your own adventure" books that I remember from my pre-teen years.
My first thought in writing a review was to say that it's a fantastic choice for readers who prefer short stories, and perfect for those of us without the time or attention span for a full-length novel. But on second thought, that puts limits on this book, and that's not my intention at all.
Besides, I picked it up thinking it would be perfect for breaktimes at work, when I only get to read for fifteen minutes at a stretch. As it has turned out, it's all too hard to set this book aside!
Like eating a bag of potato chips, it's hard to stop after just one story, and extremely tempting to go back and follow up on just one more story, to see how it ends if you go in this direction instead of that.
I found this book highly addictive, in the very best sense of the word -- where reading is involved.
