The book is written by Caper Jones who is famous for ?Caper Jones? table that helps in converting lines of codes in different technology to Function Point based productivity. In this book author has studied practices involved in development for in-house and outsourced projects for MIS software projects, systems software, commercial software, military software and end user software. Author through mailed survey has collected best practices adopted for development of different software projects. A software development project has different life cycle stages such as requirement gathering, design, code development, testing. To verify if the code being developed is as per design specifications, code review is carried out. The result of the code review results in identifying defects at an early stage; this reduces expensive rework later in the life cycle stage thus improving quality of deliverables and productivity. However this is not an easy task and requires following best practices that have already shown improving results.

The author, through survey, has found best practices for software development projects and have categorized them into 5 different categories depending on the purpose for which it is being developed. The author is of opinion that best practices for each category will be different as process adopted for each category varies. The author has found results for 36 factors that he thought would affect productivity and quality of application. Best on these findings he has explained best practices for (i) requirement gathering, (ii) design practices, (iii) code development, (iv) testing and code review, (v) project management and configuration management, (vi) recruitment and effective training, (vii) employee retention policy to reduce employee turn over so that domain knowledge can be retained in the team, (viii) recruitment process to recruit best available resources. He also has explained how reusable code can be used to improve productivity and quality. In the book also baseline data have been provided which can be used for external benchmarking.

The book also explains how technology and ergonomics factors would influence productivity. However the author clearly states the problems that he has faced while collecting information through mailed in surveys ? how questions can be mis-represented and data integrity can be questionable. However barring these facts the book attempts to educate practitioners how to run a successful software project and meet customer requirements.

Future scope of work: using these factors that influence productivity, an empirical model for productivity can be developed. The model would explain different factors that would influence productivity while maintaining high quality of deliverables.

In short the book is a perfect guide for practitioners and academics in software development organizations.
