Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Celebrating the dark origins of our most American music, Country reveals a wild shadowland of history that encompasses blackface minstrels and yodeling cowboys; honky-tonk hell and rockabilly heaven; medieval myth and musical miscegenation; sex, drugs, murder; and rays of fierce illumination on Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and others, famous and forgotten, whose demonology is America's own. Profusely and superbly illustrated, Country stands as one of the most brilliant explorations of American musical culture ever written.

Michael R Cuevas, August 8, 2012 (view all comments by Michael R Cuevas)
From a midnight Graceland visit by a gun toting drunken Jerry Lee Lewis (who wants to 'liberate' Elvis) to endless other tales of madness and glory, Nick Tosches spins a great one here. I'm not even a 'country music' fan, per se, but anything Tosches write about tends to reveal gold. Murder, the evolution of the steel guitar, yodeling cowboys and Delta blues--it's all here. I've read bios of Sonny Liston and Dean Martin by Nick--compelling stuff--and this is yet another insightful look at the dark side of pop culture. Enlightening and disturbing in the best possible way. More, Mr. Tosches, more.
