Publisher Comments:

Fidelma of Cashel - sister to the King of Muman, a religieuse of the Celtic Church and an advocate of the Brehon courts - returns in this new collection of fifteen tales. These stories of murder, mayhem, and mystery are not merely spellbinders but also provide insight into the ways and mores of the complex, fascinating society of seventh century Ireland as well as heretofore unrevealed background details of Fidelma herself.

Synopsis:

After reading my first Sister Fidelma mystery, I have been hooked. Tremayne's stories are set in Ireland in the 7th century. His protagonist is a nun of the "New Faith." Fidelma is also an advocate of the civil courts in Ireland. She is spunky, intelligent, and intuitive, giving her smug adversaries startling insights that cut to the heart of the situation. Reading these intriguing mysteries, I have also learned about the Brehon laws that were followed in this period of Ireland's history, and also some interesting history of the early church. A few examples: the Brehon laws gave equal rights to women in many areas; many early monasteries housed both women and men, and they were encouraged to marry. The set of short stories here prove more background for Fidelma, with one story from her college days, and other stories about how she might deal with certain situations, such as one story where everyone is primarily concerned with who stole the fish that was to be the main entree for a visiting VIP. Fidelma figures that out, but in the mean time also discovers the body of the chef, and determines who murdered him. Interesting and fun stories, but I'd read at least one of the full length mysteries first.
