Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Now ranked with Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, and Mies van der Rohe, Louis I. Kahn brought a reverence for history back into modern architecture while translating it into a uniquely contemporary idiom. It illuminates the richly diverse personal relationships Kahn had with such clients as Jonas Salk and Paul Mellon, and the romantic entanglements that mystified even those closest to him. While celebrating the genius of Kahnís art, the book provides an invaluable portrait of the man who created it.

Book News Annotation:

Wiseman (Yale School of Architecture) presents the first in-depth biography of famed American architect, Louis I. Kahn (1901-1974). Drawing on some 100 interviews with colleagues, coworkers, clients, and family members, the text traces Kahn's life from his birth in Estonia and immigration to America as a young child to his death in 1974. The text provides a detailed account of the personal and public life of a key figure in modern architecture, concentrating in particular on a selection of Kahn's architectural masterpieces. Illustrated throughout with b&w and color photographs and diagrams. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
