One Man's Garden Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In the sequel to The Essential Earthman, the Washington Post columnist offers a harvest of sharp observations and humorous adventures gathered during a year in his garden, along with much down-to-earth advice on horticulture.

Review:

"Henry Mitchell's writing combined the cadences of the Book of Common Prayer with the timing of Jack Benny. He was humble, cantankerous, ironic, and forbearing. He is sorely missed." Allen Lacy

About the Author

If you love to garden, now is not your time of year. Once things are put to bed in preparation of winter and the bulbs are planted, gardeners start hankering for their next fix of green-thumbery. Henry Mitchell's 'One Man's Garden' is an excellent antidote for the lack-of-garden-time blues.

By turns nostalgic, thoughtful, witty and acerbic, Mr. Mitchell becomes a sort of Every Gardener. His battles with plants that won't grow or ones that grow too well, his childhood memories of plants he has known and loved, his arguments with his dogs about their choice of bedding (taken quite literally by the dogs) plants, all contrive to distract you from the fact that you aren't outside working on your own garden.

The book is divided up into a number of essays for each month of the year. The best plan would probably be to read each month in order. I defy anyone, however, to stick to that plan. Once started, you'll find yourself needing to read "just one more" until the book is finished. The only cure for that, I'm afraid, is to pick up copies of 'The Essential Earthman' and 'Henry Mitchell on Gardening'. Perhaps between the three we can both hold out until Spring.....
