Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

From top-selling author Maureen Johnson comes a fresh, funny novel about a girl, her hotel, and an unforgettable summer.

Scarlett is the third of four children in the Martin family. The Martins live in and manage a shabby hotel in NYC that dates back to the 1920s. When Scarlett turns 15, she is put in charge of one of the hotel's 27 rooms- the Empire Suite. Into this room moves Mrs. Amberson, a failed 1970s starlet who has returned to New York to write her memoirs. Soon, Scarlett is taking dictation, running around town with Mrs. Amberson, and getting caught up in her Auntie Mame-meets-Bianca Jagger adventures.

Review:

"Johnson (13 Little Blue Envelopes) packs her latest with all the elements of a winning novel — a dramatic setting, offbeat characters, witty dialogue — but she leaves out the tension. Scarlett's family operates and lives in a rundown art deco hotel in Manhattan. It is nearly empty when strange, rich Amy checks in for the summer. Claiming to want to write a book about her life, she hires an ambivalent Scarlett as her assistant. But Scarlett's job changes when Amy decides instead to sponsor a production of Hamlet in which Scarlett's brother is acting. Soon Scarlett is clearing a rehearsal space, kissing her brother's co-star — and even helping Amy pull off an elaborate revenge scheme on a actress she thinks once wronged her. Between the play, the revenge, Scarlett's romance, the hotel and family messiness (Scarlett's sister's cancer treatments have drained the family's finances), the book lacks focus. Readers will also find some scenes hard to believe, such as the final face-off between Amy and her foe in which all is neatly resolved. Ages 12 — up." Synopsis:

Scarlett Martin has grown up in a most unusual way. Her family owns the Hopewell, a small hotel in the heart of New York City. Her nineteen-year-old brother, Spencer, is an out of work actor facing a family deadline to get his career in order. Eighteen-year-old Lola has the delicate looks of a model, the practical nature of a nurse, and a wealthy society boyfriend. Eleven-year-old Marlene is the family terror with a tragic past.

When the Martins turn fifteen, they are each expected to take over the care of a suite in the once elegant, now shabby Art Deco hotel. For Scarlett’s fifteenth birthday, she gets both a room called the Empire Suite, and a permanent guest named Mrs. Amberson. Scarlett doesn’t quite know what to make of this C-list starlet, world traveler, and aspiring autobiographer who wants to take over her life. And when she meets Eric, an astonishingly gorgeous actor who has just moved to the city, her summer takes a second unexpected turn.

With Mrs. Amberson calling the shots, Spencer’s career to save, Lola’s love life to navigate around, and Marlene’s prying eyes everywhere, things won’t be easy. Before the summer is over, Scarlett will have to survive a whirlwind of thievery, Broadway glamour, romantic missteps, and theatrical deception.

The show, as they say, must always go on . . . .

Scarlett,

Are you still asleep? I can hear you in there, snoring away. I need the following:

White plum tea (whole leaf, loose, organic)
Yerba maté lotion
Dance tights
Laptop computer (I’ll leave it to you to pick one out)
A book on how to write a book
A spicy tuna roll (brown rice)
A list of all plays currently on Broadway
Matches

$4000 should be enough. I’ve shoved the money under your door (see it?). I need these things by noon. I’m meditating now. I want my change, but feel free to take cabs if the purchases are too heavy.

Get the sushi last, obviously. And wake up! We have work to do!

Scarlett Martin lives with her parents, sisters Lola and Marlene, and older brother Spencer, in a five story high, run down art deco hotel. It sounds chique when you hear someone is living in a hotel in New York City. But the hotel has known better days. There aren't many guests and the only staff is the family. Every member of the family is in charge for one of the suites.

One day, a very excentric guest checks in, Ms Amy Amberson. Through the book we learn more of the excentric past of her... Ms Amberson takes Scarlett under her wing. And she takes also another thing under her wing....when the theatre group of Spencer gets in trouble and has no rehearsal space, Ms Amberson knows what to do..And then Scarlett falls in love with one of her brothers theatre group actors..

Suite Scarlett is an excellent and very artistic piece of ya fiction. I think it was very different if you compare it with most of the ya fiction.

This was not the usual high school/romance/drama story. This was an excellent story of an (in my eyes) lovely hotel in New York City. Combined with real characters and lots of style and a big part for theater. If you love theater and New York,(as I do) this is a perfect original and very interesting read. If there really was a Hotel Martin in New York, I would certainly stay there. This would be also a good plot for a movie!
