Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:MacArthur Foundation grant recipient Octavia E. Butler's award-winning novels have earned her an acclaimed place in women's fiction, African-American literature, and speculative fiction. Clay's Ark is a passionate, harrowing story of struggle and identity.
An innocent family, carjacked on a desolate highway, is abducted to a bizarre new world. A world being born in the California desert. They discover Earth has been invaded by an alien microorganism. The deadly entity attacks like a virus, but survivors of the disease genetically bond with it, developing amazing powers, near-immortality, unnatural desires — and a need to spread the contagion and create a secret colony of the transformed. Now the meaning of "survival" changes. For the babies born in the colony are clearly, undeniably, not human... Review:"Butler is among the best SF writers, blessed with a mind capable of conceiving complicated, futuristic situations that shed considerable light on our current affairs. Her prose is lean and literate, her ideas expansive and elegant." Houston Post

Review:"Butler creates this tale with verve, originality, and an apparent gift for the circumstantial detail, circumstantially told." Algis Budrys, Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction
Review:"What 'cyberpunk' author William Gibson does for [white readers], Octavia Butler does for people of color. She gives us a future." Vibe
Review:"A genuine SF thriller....Butler's plotting is as irresistible as the alien invader itself." Publishers Weekly
Review:"She is one of those rare authors who pay serious attention to the way human beings actually work together and against each other, and she does so with extraordinary plausibility." Locus
Review:"Butler brings Toni Morrison to mind." Publishers Weekly
Review:"Butler's books are exceptional....Butler is a realist, writing the most detailed social criticism and creating some of the most fascinating female characters in the genre....The hard edge of cruelty, violence, and domination is described in stark detail...real women caught in impossible situations." Village Voice
