Featuring full-color exemplary print designs and the grids that underpin each piece of work, this is at once a sourcebook of creative ideas, a guidebook for creating successful grids, and a digital tool ready for immediate use. Each spread shows a final printed piece on the left-hand page, while the right-hand page offers the grid reproduced in a monochrome tint of blue, with the grid overprinted in black, along with all specifications needed to create the grid. The accompanying CD offers all 90 grids in InDesign and QuarkXPress formats (indd and qxd).

Lucienne Roberts (London, England) is the founder of the design studio Sans + Baum. A signatory of the First Things First 2000 Manifesto, Roberts is a regular contributor to Eye, Grafik, and other design magazines and author of several graphic design books. She is a graduate of Central School of Art and Design in London and has taught at Middlesex University and the London College of Communication.

Book News Annotation:

In this book/CD-ROM package for graphic designers of all levels, two- page color spreads illustrate design examples and their underlying grids, and detailed captions discuss how the designers have used each grid to provide structure and add movement, flexibility, and impact to their designs. In addition to ideas for different ways of using space, type, and images, the book also gives ideas for navigational devices and information design. Details of measurements and specs are provided to allow designers to refine the elements shown to create their own layouts. An introduction outlines the place of the grid in the history of graphic design. The accompanying CD-ROM contains all of the grids featured in the book, in both InDesign and QuarkXpress. A series of tutorials introducing readers to the process of grid design is available free for download at a companion web site. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
