Publisher Comments:

Long ago in India, there lived a raja who believed that he was wise and fair. But every year he kept nearly all the people's rice for himself. Then a village girl named Rani devises a clever plan, using the surprising power of doubling to win more than one billion grains of rice from the raja.

A beautiful tale of wisdom outwitting greed. The story shows the effect of doubling, starting with one grain of rice, transforming to two grains of rice... with over a billion grains of rice after 30 days in the end! This book has lovely illustrations with vivid color and hints of gold, each page beautifully depicting the increase of rice by having different animals each day haul the load. I had heard this tale before but the cultural influence of India only adds to the charm and wit of this classic.
