Publisher Comments:

Lambda Literary Award winner Good Moon Rising is about two young women who fall in love while rehearsing a school play, realize they're gay, and resist a homophobic campaign against them. Good Moon Rising, both a New York Public Library Book for the Teenage and a Notable Children's Trade Book in the Field of Social Studies, 'takes us into the dynamics of homophobia (Horn Book). 'Garden, who gave us one of the first honest, sensitive portrayals of two young women in love in the brilliant Anne On My Mind, Farrar, 1982, offers us author thought-provoking story of homosexual love.-Voya

Synopsis:

Jan begins her senior year of high school not expecting that she will lose the starring part in the school play, take over as director when her beloved drama teacher becomes ill, and realize that she is a lesbian.

I found this book both thought provoking and touching. It gives a clear idea of what it is to be young and discover you are gay. It also shows how cruel others can be.

I could hardly tear myself away from the book, once I had started reading it and experienced the feelings of love awakening in Jan and Kerry for each other. I was particularly touched by their bravery in being forced to endure the savage animosity of other students.
This book left me wanting more and wondering about what their lives would be like as they continued to divulge their homosexuality to their families and others they would be dealing with, in the future.
