Publisher Comments:

andlt;iandgt;andlt;bandgt; You have to write!andlt;/bandgt;andlt;/iandgt; It's a class assignment. But you have nothing to write about. All the other kids seem to have something to tell because they start in right away. What can you do? Stop and think. No one else can tell andlt;iandgt;yourandlt;/iandgt; stories — about your family, your dog or cat. No one else can tell how it was when your library book got soaked in the rain. andlt;BRandgt; But what if you don't like what you write? There are all sorts of ways to change it, to make it better. Keep on playing with your words, putting them together in different ways. You want whatever you write to be good. It will get better and better as you work on it. andlt;BRandgt; This is an encouraging book, sympathetically illustrated by Teresa Flavin's charming pictures, for all young readers who worry when they're told to write something.

Synopsis:

This encouraging book, sympathetically illustrated with charming pictures, is for all young readers who worry when they're told to write something for school. The author gently persuades readers that only they can tell their stories and guides them on how to work with their words and phrases. Full-color illustrations.

About the Author

Janet S. Wong is the award-winning author of several poetry collections and picture books, including The Rainbow Hand: Poems About Mothers and Children and Grump. Janet says, "When I was a child, I hated creative writing because I felt I didn't have anything good to write about. Nothing important, or exotic. Other kids went on glamorous vacations. Other kids had amazing talents. I had a regular, boring life. It took me a while to figure out that my regular, boring life is full of lots of things that I can write about. My messy room. My mistakes. My family. My fears. And I wrote about these things here, in You Have to Write." Ms. Wong lives with her husband and their son, Andrew, in Medina, Washington.
