Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

DuBois, Fanon, Cabral is an examination of the overlap of culture, class, and political leadership in the Africana liberation struggle. Focusing on the writings and activism of W.E.B. DuBois, Frantz Fanon, and Amilcar Cabral, this book explores the three theorists' articulation of the relationship between acculturation and mass popular leadership among colonized elites in the African diaspora.

Book News Annotation:

After recognizing that large groups among the "Afri-US" population did not/do not suffer from the "double consciousness" theorized by W.E.B. Du Bois, Peterson (black studies, College of Wooster) came to see Du Bois's thesis as a class-specific phenomena representing the experience of the most colonized or transcultured group of the Afri- US population, the elite or Du Bois's "Talented Tenth." This in turn has led him to consider the problematic nature of the colonized elite as leaders of anti-colonial movements, as it has been dealt with or not dealt with in the writings of Du Bois and his American colleagues Marcus Garvey, Carter G. Woodson, and E. Franklin Frazier, as well as in the writings of Algerian theorist Frantz Fanon and Guinean theorist Amilcar Cabral. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
