Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In the past fifty years, the standard of living in most industrialized nations has risen dramatically, but the number of people describing themselves as content has remained steady or fallen. The result has been a growing desire to regain some of the virtues of simpler times, whether by forgoing luxuries, switching careers, or returning to nature. These essays reflect on the different facets of voluntary simplicity and consumer culture, providing an historic view of the movement as well as a social-scientific analysis of its causes and effects.

Book News Annotation:

Proposing "voluntary simplicity" as a alternative to consumer culture within the capitalist framework, Doherty (former managing editor, The Responsive Community and Etzioni (Institute for Communitarian Studies, George Washington U.) present 11 essays exploring the possibilities of the "voluntary simplicity" movement. Building on Maslow's theory of a hierarchy of human needs, papers explore the theoretical outlines of economic, psychological, and social aspects of consumption versus simplicity. Earlier movements towards simplicity through history are then examined. Finally, two papers critical of advocates of "voluntary simplicity" and their critique of consumption are included.
