Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In this long-overdue analysis of Scottish political philosopher John Macmurray, Frank G. Kirkpatrick traces the influences and development of Macmurray's thought. Through his study, Kirkpatrick explores the extraordinary resonances of Macmurray's political thought in modern philosophers and comments on his enduring significance.

Book News Annotation:

The development of the theories of political and religious philosopher John Macmurray (1891-1976) is traced and analyzed by author Kirkpatrick (religion, Trinity College), who argues that Macmurray's political thought needs to be seen as grounded in a religious view of the purpose of community, founded on God's intention for humankind and the ideal of human fulfillment. In addition to the discussion of Macmurray's ideas about community, Kirkpatrick explores his engagement with Marxism, his reflections on Jesus as the inheritor of the Jewish belief in the inseparability of the empirical from the religious, and his development of the "politics of the personal" in the Gifford Lectures (his most influential work).
