Publisher Comments:

Lucy Fooshee has just married Bob Bybee, the second-richest farmer in the county if you don't count the Winklejohns — and who'd want a name like Winklejohn, anyway? Add her enviable hubby to the local beauty queen titles she's won on account of her slim figure, full lips, and all-around good looks, and Lucy's the most envied young woman in Palmyra, Illinois. The most admired by men, too. Funny thing, though: now that she's married, no one even seems to notice anymore, and Lucy's feeling irritable. So when Billy Lee — a stranger with no prospects — comes to town and sees her in a whole new way, he upsets Lucy's applecart. Sure, she's got everything anyone in Palmyra could want, but maybe that's just not enough.

With her striking humor and picture-perfect observations about life in a small town, Alison Clement tells the hilarious, lusty, and ultimately touching story of a fiercely independent woman trapped in the body of a small-town beauty queen.

Synopsis:

Lucy Fooshee lives a charmed life--a local beauty queen who snared farmer Bob and became his beautiful young bride. But when sexy Billy Lee lopes into town, Lucy embarks on a scandalous affair, triggering a series of events which force the town to reveal its bigotry--and compels Lucy to confront the true meaning of happiness, sexuality, and freedom.

About the Author

Alison Clement is a former waitress and bartender who is now an elementary school librarian. Raised in the South, she moved to a small Midwestern town when she was fifteen, and now lives in western Oregon. Pretty Is As Pretty Does is her first novel.

This novel was great fun to read. I had never heard of Alison Clement and found my copy by pure chance in a used book store (in a town near Palmyra) as I was looking for a bit of summer reading. And, truly, this book seemed, at first, to be just that. But it takes some surprising turns, and by the end I was quite impressed with the novel and looking for more things by the author. Lucy is insufferably selfish and refreshingly despicable, but you come to root for her anyway, based mostly on the walls she runs into as she tries to change the outcome of a life so predictably fated it could have been tattooed into her DNA. Also, even when she's being horrible, she is so comically direct about it that it tugs at your heart. The book is full of surprises and probably a lot more popular outside small Midwestern towns than in them!
