Book News Annotation:

Over the course of the 2000s, increasing allegations of voter fraud (as opposed to electoral fraud) in the United States were raised by Republicans and in the media. In this work, Minnite (political science, Barnard College) aims to expose these allegations of individual voter fraud as a pure myth. In addition to examining the empirical data and correcting the record on specific high-profile allegations of voter fraud, she presents an argument that seeks to demonstrate that voter fraud is irrational on the part of the individual. For example, she asks, why would an undocumented immigrant with a fake social security number for work purposes risk deportation in order to commit voter fraud? She also seeks to expose the political purpose of these allegations, which serve to weaken the commitment to the right to vote, particularly for minorities, as seen in the proliferation of voter identification laws.
