Christian's Quest: An Urban Adaptation of Pilgrim's Progressby Jacqueline Busch
Synopses & Reviews
Contextualized to an urban setting and written using contemporary language, Christian's Quest brings a fresh new voice to the classic allegory, Little Pilgrims Progress.
Targeting youth primarily between the ages of 8-12, living in urban areas, Christian's Quest follows the journey of Christian, an African American boy, the various friends he meets along the way, as he travels from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. Christians' companions are predominantly African American characters and the settings depicted in the story are ones to which urban youth can relate.
The unique features of Christian's Quest are the realistic, detailed-oriented and culturally relevant black and white ink illustrations found throughout the book. These illustrations along with the story itself will captivate young readers. Also an appendix containing a dictionary of unfamiliar words and an allegorical chart are provided in the back of the book. These tools will promote literacy, expand vocabulary and increase the readers' understanding as well as explain the characters and who or what they represent to help increase the readers' understanding of the Gospel message, biblical concepts and the Christian life.

Christian had just scored a touchdown and been voted the MVP of his football team when his mom broke bad news to him. Gramps had died. Gramps, his best friend, the one who had always listened, and the person who had told Christian stories of a better city that they could both live in some day in a way that Christian could understand and get excited about.
After that day, it took Christian months to open up the book his Gramps had given him. But when he did, he read more stories of the Celestial City and of the King who ruled there. After a long talk with a man named Evangelist, Christian was ready to embark on the adventure of a lifetime towards the City that he had heard so much about. He left behind bad stuff the bullies in his neighborhood and good stuff like football. Turns out, his trip didn't need bullies to be difficult, and it didn't need football to become the best thing Christian had ever done. Follow his progress toward his destination and find out why!
