Fourteen papers cover three areas of film formation: Aspects of film formation mechanism, film property development in thermoplastic and crosslinkable systems, and the morphology and film structure of the resulting films. Advanced instrumental measurements are used to define morphology and determine unique film structures as well as to provide input into models of the film formation process.

Under pressure from the 1990 Clean Air Act to reduce the volatile organic content of coatings, scientists explore efforts to develop waterborne coatings, focusing on the scientifically challenging and commercially relevant issue of film formation. They cover the mechanisms of film formation, film properties developed during the film formation process for waterborne thermoplastic and cross-linkable systems and radiation curable systems, and the morphology and film structure resulting from the film formation processes. They rely on a number of advance morphological technologies, including transmission electron microscopy, environmental SEM, and AFM as well as routine measurements of gloss and film porosity.
