Synopsis:

First published in 1985, Robert B. Betts' unique account of the sole African American member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition is now back in an updated edition with new material and illustrations. In Search of York removes many of the fallacies surrounding York and pinpoints the important role he played in the success of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Through painstaking research and the synthesis of all the available information known about York, Betts exposes the impact of racial prejudice on historical interpretation. Neither the hero that a few romantic chroniclers have drawn nor the buffoon of many accounts tainted with racism, Betts' York emerges as a believable human being touching both the heights and depths of the world he lived in.

This is a very original piece of historical research by Robert B. Betts, who died in 1989. Betts pieced together all the available information about a man who was, up until then, a very obscure historical figure. Betts' was based on careful reading of the Lewis & Clark journals and examination of any and all records of the slave-holding Clark family. While later discoveries--a cache of Clark family letters found in 1988-- threw more light on York's life, Betts summarized well everything known up until then. Betts' work generated all the considerable interest in York that has sprung up since then: articles, paintings, and the evocative one-man dramatization of York by actor Hasan Davis--it all started with this well-written and well-illustrated book.
