Publisher Comments:

The creator of the unforgettable ?Girl from Ipanema? tenor sax tone, Stan Getz, the son of Ukrainian immigrants, took his unique sound through five decades of swing, cool, bossa, and beyond. Covering Getz?s teenage gigs with Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Stan Kenton, fame with Woody Herman, years as a masterful bandleader, and struggles with drugs and the law, this biography tells the bittersweet story of one of the most beloved jazz musicians. The book focuses on Getz?s musical legacy, exploring the lightness of touch, lyricism, and warm glow that mark his sound. It also gives insight into his skills as a consummate improviser, capable of playing with a musical, tonal, and emotional range matched by few other musicians. 100 color and black-and-white photos are included in this in-depth look at the brilliant and varied musical achievements of Stan Getz.

Book News Annotation:

Writing and broadcasting on jazz for some 30 years, Gelly is currently jazz critic for The Observer newspaper, writes and presents for BBC radio, and is also a professional tenor saxophonist. Here he chronicles the life of tenor sax legend, Stan Getz (1927-1991). The author acknowledges that Getz influenced jazz in two major ways—in disseminating Lester Young's approach to the tenor sax, and in popularizing the bossa nova as a jazz genre. But he argues that, while many obituaries identified Getz as a "pioneer who changed the face of jazz," in reality he was more significant as "a unique and highly personal artist who spoke for nobody but himself." Illustrated with 100-plus b&w photographs. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
