Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Ornamental trees, shrubs, and flowers are an important component of modern life, from houseplants to trees in public parks. This authoritative and beautifully illustrated account provides a unique source of reference for all practitioners involved in the recognition, biology, and control of the pests of ornamental crops. The author recommends appropriate control measures, including the environmentally conscious methods of handpicking insects, eliminating insect hiding places, and using certain pesticide and chemical controls. Entomologists, horticulturists, pest control specialists, integrated pest management (IPM) practitioners, growers, students, and teachers will all find this to be a thorough and comprehensive text.

Book News Annotation:

Out of print after its last publication in 1995 by Manson Publishing Ltd., London, this Timber Press reprint will provide entomologists, horticulturalists, pest control specialists, growers, and students with a reference to the recognition, biology, and control of pests of ornamental plants (with an IPM bent). Each major order and family of pest is addressed, with a description and color photos, followed by details on the pest's life history, the kind of damage caused, the severity of the plant's reaction, and appropriate control methods, beginning with the least environmentally harmful. Written by an English entomologist, the volume is written for Great Britain but, as the introduction observes, many of the pests addressed occur in other parts of the world, sometimes as accidental introductions.
