Dynamite on a China Plate

by Jay Leeming

Dynamite on a China Plate Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Review:

A first book is often the melding of influences into something new. That something new made by Jay Leeming is a full-bodied, intelligent and thoroughly satisfying group of poems...Leeming has a rare talent for image, metaphor and simile. Ithaca Times

Review:

"Jay Leeming has his own way of thinking which isn't like anyone else's. His most individual poems come from that surprising angle of vision that marks him as a real poet. His poems are winged beings that dive straight to the playful, lunatic heart of human companionship." Robert Bly

Review:

"These poems are a delight to read. They move effortlessly between the rational and irrational, the conscious and unconscious, accounting for the multiplicity of human desire and imagination." Li-Young Lee

Review:

"Jay Leeming writes like an angel. Luminous, startling poems that lift and transform...once you experience them, it is quite possible you will begin, immediately, to need them. This is a very good sign." Naomi Shihab Nye

Review:

"Every poem in Dynamite on a China Plate drenches us like the wake of a blue whale suddenly breaching from someone's suburban lawn pool, where at first we might think the beast lost or out of place, we quickly realize it is we who are lost and that the courageous occurrence of such unlikely deep diving poems like 'Supermarket Historians' is trying to find us, asking our hearts to weep out a greater water of grief and laughter big enough for us all to jump in and be beautifully lost together." Martín Prechtel, author of The Toe Bone and the Tooth

Synopsis:

Original poems by Jay Leeming, winner of The Readers' Choice Award from The Backwaters Press for 2003.

Jay leeming's poems in "Dynamite on a China Plate" entice the reader's mind to view the events in his life as if for the first time. The poet's play with language enhances the ordinary into becoming extraordinary. The beauty of each poem is captured and then let go with a surprise the reader will remember long after he has put the book down. On top of this, Leeming's poetry carries the rhythmic beat of an accomplished musician. This collection is a "must-read"--even if you don't like poetry. Thelma Turner

What a treasure Leeming's book is. As his title suggests, he gives us both the explosive and the delicate, sometimes within one poem. Leeming is provocative and demanding, gentle and nudging - harsh but not bitter, tender but not trite. He has a playful, powerful mind, and his work offers accessibility and depth. When we finish each of Leeming's poems we think, "I would like to know this poet; life is not lost on him."
