Publisher Comments:

Following nearly a decade of research, this account solves the mysterious death of biochemist Frank Olson, revealing the identities of his murderers in shocking detail. It offers a unique and unprecedented look into the backgrounds of many former CIA, FBI, and Federal Narcotics Bureau officials—including several who actually oversaw the CIAs mind-control programs from the 1950s to the 1970s. In retracing these programs, a frequently bizarre and always frightening world is introduced, colored and dominated by many factors—Cold War fears, the secret relationship between the nations drug enforcement agencies and the CIA, and the governments close collaboration with the Mafia.

Lee Rubin, September 1, 2011 (view all comments by Lee Rubin)
For those interested in the nefarious activities of the U.S. government during the 1950's (and beyond), this book is an exceptionally well researched account of the CIA's mind control experiments. At the center of the story is one of the CIA's own, a man named Frank Olson who was unwittingly dosed with LSD by his own employer. Days later he jumped (or was pushed?) to his death out a ten story window in downtown New York. Flash forward 20 years and the story explodes. Under pressure from the Rockefeller Commission, the government issues a formal public apology to the Olson family, (President Ford actually meets with Olson's wife and the press), and offers them a large settlement. All the old villains show up here, Rumsfeld and Cheney included. This story is more frightening than any X-files or Jason Bourne saga. Albarelli digs deep and his writing is lucid and engaging. The book includes a large appendix of redacted CIA documents released under the Freedom of Information Act and also illuminates much of the hidden history surrounding the government's involvement with LSD.
