Staff Pick
Suzanne Burns's Misfits and Other Heroes is a strange and compulsively readable collection. Her cast of characters is carnival-esque, her prose is fresh, and the stories are sad, bizarre, and resonant. This book is a fun-house mirror of human experience, where everything feels distorted yet true. Review-A-Day"It's downright refreshing to read stories that say something, that show a willingness to turn over the rocks of romantic relationships and shed light on the muck below — and to do it with such fun and dazzling prose, to boot." Sheila Ashdown, Powells.com (read the entire Powells.com review) Synopses & ReviewsReview:"Suzanne Burns is the ringleader of a magical, quixotic, flea circus of words. Magisterial, she sings. I love this collection — its sadness and wonder, its acrobatics, its nerve." Kate Bernheimer, editor of Fairy Tale Review Review:"Who would have thought that Oregon's misfits could be as deluded and cruel as Flannery O'Connor's Southerners and even more bizarre?" Tom Whalen, author of Dolls: Prose Poems Synopsis:Where the wild things come out to play. Magical stories with a masterful touch of soul.
