Manson's Tropical Diseases: Expert Consult (Manson's Tropical Diseases)by Gordon C. Cook
Synopses & ReviewsBook News Annotation:When Sir Patrick Manson wrote his work subtitled A manual of the
diseases of warm climates in 1898, he modestly proclaimed it to be
merely "an introduction to the important department of medicine of
which it treats" and "in no sense … a complete treatise." Now in its
22nd edition and edited by Cook (medical microbiology, Royal Free and
U. College London Medical School, UK) and Zumla (infectious diseases
and international health, U. College London, UK), this clinical
treatise covers all of the diseases associated with tropical exposure
in its 89 revised and updated chapters, which retain the same
headings as those of the 20th edition, with the exception of the
exclusion of the chapter on high altitude problems, dropped for
reasons of space. Following a chapter on the history of tropical
medicine, the chapters are presented in sections covering underlying
factors in tropical medicine such as primary care, epidemiology,
traditional medicine, the economics and financing of disease control,
and ethical considerations; symptoms and signs and the general
approach to the patient; system- oriented disease; specialties in the
tropics, including pediatrics, surgery, obstetrics, radiology and
imaging services, oral health, and travel health;
environmental/genetic disorders; viral infections; rickettsial
infections; bacterial infections; mycotic infections; protozoan
infections; helminthic infections; and ectoparasites. Appendices on
laboratory diagnosis, parasitic protozoa, medical helminthology,
medical acarology and entomology, and sources of information in
tropical medicine are available online only.
