Book News Annotation:

The Tonawanda Senecas were able to overcome disastrous treaties to regain 7,549 acres of their western New York territory from the Ogden Land Company, lands they still possess today. The strategies the chiefs and clan mothers used included petitioning officials and lobbying in Washington, preventing surveyors from entering tribal lands, disrupting land auctions, and networking with influential whites. They also hired an attorney who eventually won a landmark victory in the US Supreme Court and who successfully negotiated a new treaty in 1857, which allowed the Tonawanda Senecas to repurchase part of the reservation. In recounting the story, Hauptman (history, State University of New York-New Paltz) sheds new light on the role of Red Jacket and Ely S. Parker, delves into women's roles within Tonawanda Seneca society, and describes the development of the Longhouse religion. The book includes b&w historical photos and illustrations and appendices of documents. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
