Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This first novel written in the 1930s by the dean of Mexican-American folklore charts the coming of age of a young Mexican American on the Texas-Mexico border set against the background of guerrilla warfare, banditry, land grabs, abuses by the Texas Rangers and the overpowering pressures to disappear into the American melting pot.

This book was wonderful. When Paredes takes you into the inner conflicts of Gulainto fighting American naturalism and being proud of his mexican culture, he really make you think about the other side of America. That we are not always the victor and maybe even the bad guys at times. You feel how Gulainto is being torn in two as he is being pulled to Americanistic ideals while still trying to hold on to his own rich Mexican culture. Over all this is a really great book! Everyone should read it, but especially people of Mexican-American decent.
