This is a great introduction to the work of Jaan Kross--Estonia's preeminent man of letters. It tells the fictionalized tale of Friedrich Martens, diplomat and jurist for Czarist Russia at the turn of the 20th century. Martens is a man caught between his Estonian heritage, which is threatened by czarist policies of Russification, and his public identity as an international representative for Mother Russia.

An intriguing insight into Estonia's colonial past by that nation's best known and Nobel Prize nominated author, Jaan Kross.
