Once primarily a finishing operation involving low rates of removal, grinding has advanced into a central machining process that ranges from high-removal rate processes to the domains of ultra-high accuracy and superfinishing and overlaps with other machining operations such as superfinishing, lapping, polishing, and flat honing. In this handbook the authors (of the U. of Toledo, Saint- Gobain Abrasives, Germany's Fraunhofer-Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK, the UK's Advanced Manufacturing Technology Research Laboratory, and Japan's Keio U.) describe fundamentals and applications of abrasive machining processes with grinding wheels, aiming to cover the broad range of operations in which grinding is now involved. The first ten chapters cover basic processes and include discussion of parameters, material removal mechanisms, wheels, abrasives, specification of the bond, dressing, grinding dynamics, coolants, monitoring, and the economics of grinding. Applications are discussed in chapters on ductile materials, ceramics, machine technology, surfaces, external cylindrical grinding, internal grinding, centerless grinding, and ultrasonic assisted grinding.
