Synopses & Reviews

Book News Annotation:

With an emphasis on avoiding confrontations in the first place, this book gives advice on how to camp and travel safely in grizzly bear country. Following an introduction to bear evolution, biology, and behavior, the author offers information on cooking and food storage techniques, camping and travel tips, advice related to typical recreation activities such as mountain-biking or fishing, descriptions on what to do in the event of a close encounter of the bear kind, and discussion of firearms and pepper spray as bear deterrents. Throughout the book, he offers "fact or fallacy" boxes debunking or confirming bits of common wisdom about bears and bear encounters and he even spends an entire chapter demolishing the myths that bears are attracted to menstrual blood or human sexual activity.
