Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography is one of the most famous works in American literature. He started it as a private collection of anecdotes for his son, but soon it was transformed into a work of history. This is a charming, self-portrait of one of America's greatest forefathers.

While Ben Franklin's autobiography (clever title guy) is an essential document of early American literature, it is not the most compelling read. As Melville sardonically noted, "Jack-of-all-trades, master of each and mastered by none-the type and genius of his land. Franklin was everything but a poet." It will give you insight into some important aspects of the American character, including the drive for self-improvement, unassuming egoism, and the rags to riches ethos. Regardless of his dry prose style, he did invent a fly swatting rocking chair.
