An inspirational inside look at the trailblazing methodology developed by the nonprofit strategy and training organization, smartMeme, this unique exploration provides progressive activists with the tools to get stories into the media, build successful campaigns, and connect with other organizations the world over. Providing resources, theories, hands-on tools, and illuminating case studies for the next generation of activists, this resource shows how culture, media, memes, and narrative intertwine with social-change strategies and offers practical methods to amplify progressive causes in popular culture. A summation of the smartMeme approach, this study in memetics provides practical exercises to augment movements for justice, ecological sanity, and transformative social change.

I felt that I could strategically change the world, at least in small ways to start, after reading this book. It outlined how to make change in many clear and distinct ways.

I saw one of the co-authors speak recently in San Francisco and thought that he was really smart. One of his big points, represented in the book, is that for social movements, telling the truth isn't enough - you have to make the truth meaningful and you do that through telling a story, or using the elements of narrative to help you create your campaign so that it is stronger. Of course smartMeme is not the first group to say this (Stephen Duncombe is another), but this is one of the first books I've read that gives actual tools and also case studies of how progressive/left groups have put these ideas into practice.
If you are a progressive/radical left activist, you work for a non profit, or you work in communications/messaging, this is a great addition to your bookshelf.
