Synopses & Reviews

Book News Annotation:

One of the pioneers of modern Korean literature, Yi Kwang-Su (1892- 1950) was the author of the popular serialized novel Mujong (The Heartless). The story deals with a young man who is torn between his love for two women: one from a traditional family and another who embraces Western cultural values. This volume represents the first English translation of the novel. Lee also provides background information on the author's life and early short stories in the introduction. Lee, who holds a PhD in East Asian Languages and Cultures from Columbia U., is Yi's granddaughter. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
