Book News Annotation:

In 1581, Rousset, a celebrated French physician whose patients included Henri IV, wrote the first treatise on caesarean birth, a fundamental, and widely used text on the topic. Cyr (obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive medicine, Michigan State U.) has done an admirable job in his translation, the first ever produced in English, supplementing Rousset's text with notes on the medical procedures and the ancient and modern scientists, doctors, and other figures quoted by Rousset. The translation is introduced by an extensive commentary by Baskett (obstetrics and gynaecology, Dalhousie U., Halifax, Canada) detailing the medical history of the procedure and giving background on Rousset and the reception of his work. This is a notable addition to the history of medicine, one that will also be of note to scholars of women's history. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
