Book News Annotation:

The temple site of Mangyu is one of a chain of Buddhist temple sites located on the Indo-Tibetan border, in Ladakh, Kashmir. Buddhism spread from this area into Tibet (Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism) but the religion was destroyed in the region 800 years ago, about the time when the temple was built. The location in the high mountains fostered its preservation, and Von Ham, who has been traveling the Himalayas studying early Tibetan cultural sites for more than two decades, undertook documentation of this previously undocumented site. This volume provides a visual journey in color photographs of dazzling chapels, shrines, murals, and paintings. Accompanying contributions by art historian Rob Linrothe, architect Gerald Kozica, and Tibetologist Amy Heller discuss history and cultural context, inscriptions, style, and architecture. A foreword by the King of Ladakh offers an appreciation of the author and his team. This beautiful volume (oversize: 9x12") will interest a wide audience of historians, art historians, scholars of religion, and archaeologists.
