Publisher Comments:

Leaving from Beirut, Gustave Flaubert and his friend Maxime Du Camp set out on a five-month journey that spans Lebanon to Piraeus and passes through Palestine, Syria, Asia Minor, and Constantinople. With a laconic text, sceneries, beliefs, people, rites, and customs are described by an author who, treading the line between excitement and containment, attempts to capture the complete experience of his travels through the Middle East.
