Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

On June 16, 1965, after more than 20 takes over two days, Bob Dylan and his band finally finished recording “Like a Rolling Stone,” a six and a half minute song that became, and would remain, one of the most influential compositions of modern pop music. In this erudite and extremely engaging analysis of Dylans hit, Greil Marcus describes the epic recording session and also discusses the songs importance both within the context of the artists oeuvre and within the larger historical and cultural framework. The study demonstrates how the songs lyrics—open to multiple interpretations—grounded it in the turbulent decade of the 1960s but also make it relevant today.
