Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This book presents a complete, easy-to-understand view of ultrasound technology. It is ideal for beginners and experienced users alike, as well as for those needing to understand the capabilities of this technology. The author explains key theories and presents factual information in a user-friendly format that is heavily illustrated and written in a unique question-and-answer style. Mathematical detail is contained in the appendices. Ultrasound and Elastic Waves provides engineers and technicians with the information they need to use ultrasound devices properly and serves as a reference for others who need to understand any aspect of the subject.

Ultrasound has found an increasing number of applications in recent years due to greatly increased computing power. Ultrasound devices are often preferred over other devices because of their lower cost, portability, and non-invasive nature. Patients using ultrasound can avoid the dangers of radiological imaging devices such as x-rays, CT scans, and radioactive media injections. Ultrasound is also a preferred and practical method of detecting material fatique and defects in metals, composites, semiconductors, wood, etc.

Book News Annotation:

Retired space engineer Lempriere offers not an academic text, but an introduction and reference on ultrasound or ultrasonics, called sonography in the medical community. He assumes readers to be nonspecialists, and the few formulas he provides can be skipped; for readers with a knowledge of differential calculus, vectors, and matrix algebra, he does append derivations of the formulas. In a question-and-answer format, he explores general principles, wave propagation concepts, interactions between types of waves and between waves and surfaces, transducers and electronic hardware (without reference to specific proprietary information, and data processing software concepts).

Review:

"Ultrasound and Elastic Waves" is interesting for use as an introduction and reference for non-specialists and newcomers in the field.
