Faith of My Fathers: A Family Memoirby John Mccain
Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:Senator John McCain learned about life and honor from his grandfather and father, both four-star admirals in the U.S. Navy. Both their careers and their courage helped prepare McCain for the biggest challenge of his life when, as a naval aviator, he was shot down over Hanoi in 1967 and seriously injured. When his captors realized McCain's impressive military legacy, they offered him early release. In what has now become a legendary act of heroism, McCain refused the offer and was subsequently tortured, held in solitary confinement, and imprisoned for more than five years. Faith of My Fathers is about what McCain learned from his father and grandfather, and how their example enabled him to survive.Told with humility, grace, and humor, it is a story of three imperfect men who faced adversity and emerged with their honor intact. It is a story to inspire and instruct, one that shows what fathers give to their sons, and what, ultimately, endures. Review:"Hard to top and impossible to read without being moved."(--USA Today) Review:"Faith of My Fathers is a powerful story of a war hero. In it we learn much of what matters most. As prisoner (and later Senator) McCain instructs us: Glory is not an end in itself, but rather a reward for valor and faith. And the greatest freedom and human fulfillment comes from engagin in a noble enterprise larger than oneself. Faith of My Fathers teaches deep truths that are valid in any age but that warrant special attention in our own."(--William Bennett) Review:"A breath of fresh air. . . . Compelling, harrowing. . . and bluntly self-critical."(--Seattle Post Intelligencer) Review:"Restrained and honest. . . . Lively and readable. A testament to the martial values of honor and patriotism. . . . It is impossible to read this book without realizing that a hero is what he is."(--New York Times) Review:"A good read . . . engaging, sometimes funny, and often profoundly moving. . . . The family stories, the naval history, the fighter-jock anecdotes, and the stoic bravery of the POWs--makes for a large, almost unwieldy, and sublimely American story. . . . If you are yourself a patriot and find yourself stirred by stories of honest patriotism, then you will surely find Faith of My Fathers irresistible."(--National Review) Review:"McCain's character has withstood tests the average politician can only imagine. . . . He may be the last of his kind."(--Newsweek) Synopsis:The Navy veteran and U.S. senator describes the military careers of his grandfather and father, his own experiences as a POW in Vietnam, and his political career. Synopsis:Based on what McCain has learned from his grandfather and his father--how their example enabled him to endure hardships as a Vietnam War POW--"Faith of My Fathers" tells the stories of three imperfect men who faced adversity and emerged with their honor intact. "A thoughtful first-person take on survival, both physical and psychological, under brutal circumstances. . . . Hard to top and impossible to read without being moved".--"USA Today". Photos throughout.
