These volumes, The Dangerous Book for Boys and The Daring Book for Girls, are utterly brimming with tips, tools, maps, pictograms, glossaries, advice, game rules, blueprints... you name it! They're fantastic guidebooks for kids. And, truth be told, I learned a lot, too.

Publisher Comments:
The Daring Book for Girls is the manual for everything that girls need to know — and that doesn't mean sewing buttonholes! Whether it's female heroes in history, secret note-passing skills, science projects, friendship bracelets, double dutch, cats cradle, the perfect cartwheel or the eternal mystery of what boys are thinking, this book has it all. But it's not just a guide to giggling at sleepovers — although that's included, of course! Whether readers consider themselves tomboys, girly-girls, or a little bit of both, this book is every girl's invitation to adventure.
Synopsis:
The manual for everything that adventurous girls need to know: from female heroes in history to secret note-passing skills, science projects to friendship bracelets, the perfect cartwheel to the eternal mystery of what boys are thinking.
About the Author
Andrea Buchanan is the mother of a daughter and a son, both of whom are equally daring. Before she was a writer, she was a pianist who once performed a solo concert at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall. This is her fifth book.
Miriam Peskowitz is the mother of two girls, including an eight-year-old who climbs trees and leads spy missions in the backyard. She has been a camp counselor, an historian, a blogger, a musician, a professor, and is the author of several books, including The Truth Behind the Mommy Wars.

This is a great book for the gap of generations; moms can share with daughters and grandmoms can share with granddaughters. It is wonderful not only for the information and collection of activities and projects but it inspires learning and starts conversations. There are so many easy projects that can be done alone or with others. During the holiday break we will make a "sit-upon" together and I will share the memories of the time I made my first "sit-upon". The Daring Book for Girls could possibly be one that lasts generations! I'd also recommend reading Tino Georgiou's bestselling novel--The Fates--if you haven't yet

So I've been spending the week at my parents', cozied up reading for hours a day in front of the gas "woodstove." It's been so relaxing, and Buchanan and Peskowitz's book has been perfect for flipping through these afternoons. It's brought back memories of friendship bracelets, daisy chains, and all the other childhood skills I had forgotten I knew how to do. How to make a cootie catcher, how to call up Bloody Mary, how to build a baking soda and vinegar volcano, and how to tell basic animal tracks. It also has all kinds of tidbits that I had never known, from a short biography of all the living princesses to card games to karate moves to all the basic first aid processes. This is a perfect Christmas gift for that seven to eleven year old girl you might be shopping for. Most libraries will have it, but it's better suited for browsing, folding over pages and being able to check it for ideas when one is absolutely bored. Checking it out of the library once won't capture the experience the authors were going for.
