Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This richly readable book is the product of Charles Darwin's amazing journey aboard the Beagle where he made observations that led to his revolutionary theory of natural selection. Complete and unabridged.

Synopsis:

When the Beagle sailed out of Devonport on the 27th of December 1831, Charles Darwin was 22 and setting off on the voyage of a lifetime. His journal of the voyage shows us a naturalist making patient observations, above all in geology.

Read the Voyage of the Beagle in any edition. This one in particular is fine, I'm sure.

It is not what you think it's going to be. The bearded Darwin that we all have in mind is another man entirely than the man you meet in this book.

Imagine listening to your coolest uncle tell you adventure stories from his world travels. Now imagine that they are all true. That's what it's like to read this book.

Moreover, it is terrific to hear Darwin hint at the profound realizations he had come to about evolution and ecology in this journal before he actually let the other shoe drop.

Fantastic.
