This was such an EXCITING book! Keeping in mind that Livy wrote it from historical writings, already extant and records, and the fact that historians then used fact AND their own literary devices(it is thought) to fill in the lines, and to write speeches of Hannibal, or Africanus Scipio(the key Roman general), it comes close to any fictional classic written since then. Livy was a Great writer! That, and the fact that the Carthaginian war was MUCH closer for the Romans to being a DEFEAT, and the fact that it lasted SO much LONGER and was SO DEVASTATING for the growing Roman Republic, than is thought, makes it a book that ACTUALLY kept me UP AT NIGHT, READING FAR LONGER THAN I PLANNED and DYING TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED NEXT...IN OTHER WORDS, IT'S A REAL PAGE TURNER!! You should read it!!
