For someone who has never been immersed in many of the tragedies that went on in Russia, Germany and surrounding lands during the time that Stalin was in power, I believe this memoir served telling about the attrocities that occured. The unique point of view, of a 30 year old wife, academian, and mother of two being taken away from all that she knew because of the finger turning witch hunt to find anti-communists, shows the progression of that era. From first those who are considered propagandists, to those who know them, to those in power who were running the local operations. It is one of the best books that I have read in a while, a wonderful change from a Gusdorf esque theory of what an autobiography should be.
